Which Supplements Are Actually HSA/FSA-Eligible?

Most supplements need an LMN to be HSA/FSA-eligible (prenatals are the exception). Here's how to get one and which Shop picks qualify.

Supplements are a sort of gray area in HSA/FSA eligibility. They’re not automatically eligible like prescription and over-the-counter meds, but they definitely serve a medical purpose in certain cases. So before giving up and leaving your account untouched, know that you can secure HSA/FSA eligibility for supplements with a Letter of Necessity, or LMN, from a doctor.

Ahead, we’ll break down how to use your HSA or FSA to buy supplements, and explore a few supplement categories worth considering for your wellness routine.

Multivitamins and HSA/FSA Eligibility

If you don’t currently take a multivitamin, it’s never too late to start—and doing so can help fill gaps in your diet and manage changing nutritional needs, especially in later life. But high-quality vitamins don’t come cheap, and the price of a daily pill can really stack up. That’s where an HSA or FSA can come in handy if your multivitamin will help with a condition, like diagnosable nutrient deficiencies (i.e., anemia).

Multivitamins used for general wellness or everyday use aren’t automatically HSA/FSA-eligible, so you’ll need an LMN. But there’s a big exception: prenatal vitamins! Prenatal vitamins are pre-approved, meaning you can use your HSA or FSA for them without securing an LMN.

Is Creatine HSA/FSA-Eligible?

Creatine seems like all the fitness world can talk about these days, and understandably so. It helps your muscles regenerate energy in the form of ATP, and it’s the most effective nutritional supplement for increasing high-intensity exercise capacity and lean muscle mass (when paired with resistance training), according to the International Society of Sports Nutrition. It’s now popular across the spectrum from casual gym-goers to pro athletes, but is it HSA/FSA-eligible? Potentially!

To use your HSA or FSA for creatine, you’ll need an LMN proving the creatine helps treat a diagnosed condition, not just general fitness. Considering creatine’s health benefits, applicable conditions might include:

  • Sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss)
  • Certain cognitive concerns (creatine has been found to support cognitive function)
  • Depression (emerging research shows that creatine supplementation may help with depressive symptoms)

This isn’t a comprehensive list—when in doubt, chat with your doctor about whether creatine could work (and be HSA/FSA-eligible) for you.

What About Collagen?

Collagen is another buzzy supplement you might’ve been eyeing for bouncier skin, thicker hair, less creaky joints, or digestive support. Since it’s widely used for aesthetic benefits (i.e., more youthful-looking skin), it’s often not HSA/FSA-eligible. But there are a few exceptions; it may help with the following diagnosable conditions:

  • Osteoarthritis and other degenerative joint conditions, as collagen can support cartilage and help with joint pain and stiffness
  • Skin conditions that can benefit from collagen supplementation, like xerosis (dry skin)
  • Digestive issues (collagen helps promote a healthy intestinal lining)

Can You Use Your HSA/FSA for Probiotics?

If you’re not on board with the gut health hype yet, it’s not too late to start. Prebiotics are a type of non-digestible fiber that feed the microorganisms in your gut, while probiotics are live, “healthy” microorganisms to support your gut microbiome. Taking these gut-supportive supplements can support digestion and immunity, but they’re only HSA/FSA-eligible with an LMN.

Prebiotics and probiotics may help with various conditions, including IBS, IBD, recurrent infections, hypertension, and high cholesterol. If you’re considering taking one for a chronic condition, chat with your doctor first to make sure it’s right for you.

Bottom Line: You’ll Probably Need an LMN

For virtually every supplement (except for prenatals and those directly prescribed by a doctor), you’ll need to nab an LMN if you want to buy them with HSA or FSA funds. But don’t let that crush your dreams of an affordable supplement stack! Getting an LMN for your supplements is probably easier than you think with online platforms like Truemed, which grants LMNs remotely (for eligible patients) using an online questionnaire.

  • Momentous’ Essential Multivitamin combines bioavailable forms of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients (plant-based nutrients) in a blend designed to support immunity, energy, and long-term health. • Brain MD’s NeuroVite Plus Multivitamin is a strong choice if your primary goal is to support brain health. It’s a daily multivitamin with over 50 nutrients, including a Brain Boosting Blend, an antioxidant-rich Fruit and Vegetable Blend, and a Digestive Enzyme Blend for effective absorption.

Prenatal Vitamins

  • The Prenatal from GutPersonal is formulated to simplify your supplement routine by including all of the nutrients required for fertility, pregnancy, and breastfeeding. It contains methylated forms of folate and B12 for better absorption, plus sufficient amounts of choline, which many prenatals fall short on.
  • Ritual’s Prenatal Multivitamin packs 12 key nutrients for a healthy pregnancy into two small, citrus-essenced capsules (because the last thing morning sickness needs is a horse pill). Ritual focuses on transparency, ensuring you know exactly where each ingredient comes from and why it’s included.
  • WeNatal for Her contains 24 essential nutrients for fertility, pregnancy, fetal development, and postpartum recovery. It uses nutrients in their most absorbable forms, including methylated folate, to ensure you get the most of each three-capsule dose.

Creatine

  • Naked Creatine is for the clean-eating minimalist: it contains 100% pure creatine monohydrate. Nothing else. It also comes in a 1kg tub (200 servings), so you won’t have to reorder for a while.
  • Nutrigenius+ Micronized Creatine: Micronized creatine is processed into smaller particles, making it easier for your digestive system to absorb. In this blend, it’s paired with leucine, isoleucine, valine, HMB, magnesium malate, and natural sweetness from stevia and organic beet root for a well-rounded recovery drink after intense workouts.
  • Promix Non-GMO Creatine is another single-ingredient wonder, with just 100% pure micronized creatine monohydrate. It’s made in the USA, non-GMO verified, and third-party tested, too.

Collagen

  • True Nutrition’s Multi-Collagen combines Type I (for your skin, hair, and nails), Type II (for your joints and cartilage), and Type III (for your blood vessels and organs) collagen from bovine, marine, and chicken sources. It covers all of your collagen bases, with a bulk size available for significant savings.
  • The ’Pause Life’s Skin & Bone Collagen contains two patented collagen peptides, one for skin elasticity and texture and another for bone health and density. It’s particularly well-suited for those looking to offset the effects of menopause, which can really do a number on bone strength.

Probiotics

  • DS-01 Daily Synbiotic contains 24 clinically studied probiotic strains for 53.6 billion AFU enclosed in a prebiotic outer capsule, designed to protect the probiotics from stomach acid so your gut can actually benefit from them.
