The Most Engaging Prize Strategy for Every Stridekick Challenge Mode

Not all challenge prizes are created equal. Discover the best reward strategy for every Stridekick challenge mode to keep more participants motivated, engaged, and moving until the very end.

Written by Klara Carges

Your reward and recognition strategy is an often overlooked, but critical element to your challenge experience. It can be tempting to reward “the most steps.” But that likely won’t motivate the participants you’re running this challenge for: the people who need a bit more help in boosting their daily movement.

A good prize strategy does more than reward the winner. It keeps the rest of your group moving.

The right prize depends less on your budget and more on how your challenge actually works. A Streak challenge needs a different approach than a Leaderboard, and a Group Virtual Race needs a different approach than both.

Read below to learn how to match your prizes to each Stridekick challenge mode so more people stay stepping from day one.

Universal Prize Principles

__wf_reserved_inherit

These hold up across every mode, every group, every challenge.

Spread the recognition. The more people who feel like they have a real shot at being recognized, the more people stay engaged all the way to the end.

Use a raffle or lottery model for competitive modes. Raffles tied to consistent syncing or goal completion are fair, motivating, and cheat-resistant. Everyone who shows up has a shot. Lotteries reward consistent effort instead of only top totals, creating better engagement and less step-count skepticism. Here's the full breakdown of how to keep prizes fun, fair, and cheat-proof.

Match the prize to the behavior. For consistency modes, like Streak or Stick to it, focus on how many daily goals participants have reached (even if not every single day). For progress modes like Target or Virtual Race, reward consistent pacing and milestones towards a larger goal. For teams, highlight days of close competition, breakout performances week over week, and consistent contributors. For group goals, highlight days of big movement, most improved participants, and group pacing week over week.

Let participants set their own goal. Target, Streak, and Stick To It all support personalized goals, which means participants can choose their own target from a range you define. When someone sets a goal they actually believe they can hit, they're more motivated to chase a prize attached to it. Here's how to set it up in SuperDash.

Don't stop at one challenge. The energy right after a challenge ends is some of the highest motivation your group will ever have. Here's why running just one challenge and calling it a day leaves so much on the table, and what to do instead. And if you want to keep different personality types engaged all the way through, stacking challenge modes is one of the best moves you can make.

Prize Strategy by Stridekick Challenge Mode

🥇 Leaderboard

__wf_reserved_inherit

How it works: A head-to-head competition of who can get the most steps, distance, or active minutes.

Leaderboard is your most competitive mode. That energy is exciting, but it also means your prize strategy needs to do extra work to keep the whole group engaged, not just the people at the top. (Wondering if Leaderboard is right for your group in the first place? This is worth a read.)

When only the top spot gets recognized, people start questioning each other's step counts or feeling disengaged when a few top steppers blow everyone else out of the water. Take the pressure off by designing prizes that reward effort, consistency, and participation instead of raw totals.

Best prize format: Raffle plus category recognition

Recognition and prizes:

  • Daily Sync Champ: one raffle entry for every individual who synced data each day of the challenge. Pick one winner via lottery at challenge end.
  • Most Improved: Who had the biggest jump in average daily activity from week one to the final week?
  • Most Consistent: Who was the steadiest performer day over day? Reward the participant that showed the least amount of deviation in their daily activity.
  • Single Day Champion: Highlight the participant with the highest single-day activity count (can be steps, distance or active minutes).
  • Weekend Warrior: Who had the highest average activity Friday through Sunday?
  • Weekday Hustler: Who had the highest average Monday through Friday?
  • Top 3 overall movers on the leaderboard: The classic recognition strategy that will be reflected in the app challenge rankings. Ensure this is not the only recognition you do.

🎯 Target

__wf_reserved_inherit

How it works: Reach a cumulative total of steps, distance, or active minutes by the end of the challenge.

Target challenges are flexible by design. Participants work toward one larger goal over the course of the challenge, without worrying about perfect daily consistency. It's one of the most inclusive modes because everyone can move at the speed that works for them.

Best prize format: Raffle for goal finishers, and mid challenge milestones

Recognition and prizes:

  • Goal Finishers: One raffle entry for every participant who reached 100% of the Target goal. Select winners via lottery. This gives everyone who reached the goal a shot at a prize.
  • First person to reach their goal: a "First to Finish" shoutout
  • 80% of goal reached: Honorary mention for those who reached at least 80% of the Target goal.
  • Mid-challenge milestone: one raffle entry for every participant who has reached at least 50% of the Target goal by halfway through the challenge. Keep up momentum and encourage users to stay on track.

🗺️ Virtual Race

__wf_reserved_inherit

How it works: Reach a total distance goal by challenge end

Virtual Race includes a virtual map that participants traverse as they move in real life. The map gives people a visible sense of progress that is often more motivating than a leaderboard alone. Prizes work best when they play into the race energy.

Best prize format: Podium prizes plus a raffle for those who finished the race

Recognition and prizes:

  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to cross the finish line: Recognition for those who finish the race first
  • Race finishers: One raffle entry for every person who reaches the distance goal by challenge end. Select winners from this pool of participants who completed the race.
  • Top 5 finishers by total distance: individual callouts in the wrap-up
  • Most distance in a single day: a fun bonus shoutout for the person who had the most distance in one day
  • Everyone who synced activity every day: raffle entry for every participant who synced data each day of the challenge. Select a winner from this pool of diligent syncers.

🔥 Streak

__wf_reserved_inherit

How it works: Hit a daily step, distance, or active minutes goal every day of the challenge.

Streak is all about daily consistency. Participants aim to hit the same daily activity goal each day of the challenge. Their final score is based on the total number of days participants reached the daily goal. While hitting your goal every day of the challenge is an admirable feat, participants should be rewarded for Streaks of any length: 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 days etc! It’s hard to hit the same goal every day.

Best prize format: A lottery based on tiered goal completions, plus hot streak highlights

Recognition and prizes:

  • Perfect streak: Hit the goal every single day of challenge. Recognize all users who reached this milestone as it is hard to achieve and deserves meaningful recognition. Participants who reach every goal get 3 entries into a raffle.
  • 75% of goals completed: Participants earn 2 raffle entries for reaching at least 75% of their daily goals.
  • 60%+ of goals completed: One raffle entry for participants who reach at least 60% of their daily goals.
  • Comeback recognition: For those who missed early, but still finished strong: A shoutout for sticking with it.
  • 5-Day Streakers: Shoutout anyone who reached a hot streak of 5 consecutive days.
  • 7-Day Streakers: Shoutout anyone who reached a hot streak of 7 consecutive days.
  • 10-Day+ Streakers: Shoutout anyone who reached a hot streak of 10+ consecutive days.

✅ Stick To It

__wf_reserved_inherit

How it works: Hit a daily goal a set number of times over the course of the challenge.

Participants have two targets: a daily goal and a total number of times they should reach that daily goal over the course of the challenge. It's more forgiving than Streak as it doesn’t require you to try and hit the same goal every day, just a specified number of times. This mode consistently gets strong participation across groups with varied fitness levels and schedules.

Best prize format: Completion-based prizes with shoutouts for notable efforts

Recognition and prizes:

  • 100% of goals completed: Participants earn a raffle entry for reaching the total number of goals required. Pick a winner among this pool of participants.
  • 80% of goals completed: Shoutout for those reached 80% of the goals required.
  • 60% of goals completed: Shoutout for those reached 60% of the goals required.
  • Above and Beyond: A bonus shoutout for anyone who pushed past the total goal requirement
  • Most improved: Who had the biggest jump in average daily activity from week one to the final week?

🧘 Freestyle (Custom Activity)

__wf_reserved_inherit

How it works: Manual logging of a daily custom activity

Freestyle lets participants track wellness habits beyond steps. Participants manually log a custom activity you specify during the challenge set up – things like drinking water, meditating, or getting eight hours of sleep. Participants log this goal every day of the challenge, or a certain number of times throughout the challenge. Prizes work best when they connect directly to the habit itself. Not sure what to track? Here are 10 creative custom activity challenge ideas to get you started.

Best prize format: A lottery based on tiered goal completions

Recognition and prizes:

  • 100% of goals completed: Participants earn a raffle entry for reaching the total number of goals required. Pick a winner among this pool of participants.
  • 80% of goals completed: Shoutout for those reached 80% of the goals required.
  • 60% of goals completed: Shoutout for those reached 60% of the goals required.
  • Most encouraging in the group chat: A community award that recognizes the people who reminded others to log their activity or kept energy high.

🏆 Team Leaderboard

__wf_reserved_inherit

How it works: Be the team with the highest average total activity

Team Leaderboard is about collective wins where everyone must consistently contribute to keep the team average score high. Average totals are used to keep scores fair across teams of different sizes.

Best prize format: Team-based experiential reward plus individual and honorary team callouts

Recognition and prizes:

  • Winning Team: The #1 team on the leaderboard with the highest average activity. We recommend rewarding teams with a shared experience!
  • Runner-up Teams: a consolation shoutout that highlights #2 and #3 on the leaderboard
  • Most Consistent Team: Recognize the team who had the steadiest daily average in activity
  • Best Team Spirit: Can be based on who was most engaged in chat or had the most creative team name. A fun non-performance award any team can win.
  • Top Individual Movers: individual callouts across teams that keep personal motivation visible within a team format

🚩 Team Virtual Race

__wf_reserved_inherit

How it works: Teams work together to rack up a collective distance score and seek to cross the finish line first.

Teams move together across a shared map, and the finish line is a collective achievement. Team distance scores are calculated as an average total distance, to keep scores fair across teams of different sizes. Prizes work best when they honor both the team result and the individual contributions that got them there.

Best prize format: Podium team prizes plus individual standout recognition

Recognition and prizes:

  • 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams to finish: podium team prizes that reward teams who completed the race first.
  • Race Finishers: finisher recognition for teams that reached the finish line by challenge end.
  • Highest Average Total Distance: This team may not have been first to finish, but racked up the highest average total distance score by challenge end.
  • Top Individual Movers: individual callouts across teams that keep personal motivation visible within a team format
  • Most Consistent Team: Recognize the team who had the most consistent daily distance pace

👣 Group Target

__wf_reserved_inherit

How it works: Participant activity is combined to reach one, big collective goal.

When you set a goal this big, everyone has to show up! Focus on group goal completion and progress throughout the challenge. Prizes work best when they feel collective too.

Best prize format: Group celebration for goal completion plus individual contributor recognition

Recognition and prizes:

  • Goal Reached: a group celebration and collective prize like a shared experience or an extra day of PTO for everyone!
  • Above and Beyond: a bonus recognition that acknowledges the group went further than expected
  • Top Movers: individual recognition for those who contributed the most activity
  • Most Consistent: Who was the steadiest performer day over day? Reward the participant that showed the least amount of deviation in their daily activity.
  • Most Improved: Who had the biggest jump in average daily activity from week one to the final week?
  • Dedicated Syncers: Raffle for anyone who synced activity every day of the challenge

🌍 Group Virtual Race

__wf_reserved_inherit

How it works:  Combine all participants' distance into one score to cross the finish line together.

The whole group moves one pin across the map. Group Virtual Race works well with milestone rewards because admins can celebrate progress before the finish line instead of waiting until the challenge ends.

Best prize format: Milestone shoutouts, finish line celebration and individual highlights

Recognition and prizes:

  • 25%, 50%, 75% milestones hit: group shoutouts or small prizes at each checkpoint, don't wait for the finish line to recognize progress
  • Finish line crossed: a group celebration for the collective achievement
  • Top Movers: individual recognition for those who contributed the most activity
  • Most Consistent: Who was the steadiest performer day over day? Reward the participant that showed the least amount of deviation in their daily activity.
  • Most Improved: Who had the biggest jump in average daily activity from week one to the final week?
  • Dedicated Syncers: Raffle for anyone who synced activity every day of the challenge

💖 Fundraiser

__wf_reserved_inherit

How it works: Set a collective goal, and donate to a charity of your choice if the group reaches the goal

In fundraiser challenges, recognition works best when milestones are celebrated and everyone is regularly reminded of the bigger, charitable mission. Keep it warm, community-focused, and connected to why the group is moving in the first place.

Best prize format: Milestone shoutouts, goal completion celebration and individual highlights

Recognition and prizes:

  • 25%, 50%, 75% milestones hit: Group shoutouts for mini milestones. Use each opportunity to remind users of the mission and why their movement matters to the cause
  • Goal complete, fundraising unlocked!: Celebrate when the goal is met and the donation funds are unlocked.
