How to Run a STEPtember Group Fitness Challenge: 7 Ideas, Goals, Prizes, and a Ready-to-Use Template
Planning a STEPtember group fitness challenge? Explore seven ready-to-launch ideas for friends, families, and companies—plus goals, prizes, and a one-click challenge template.
September has 30 days, cooler walking weather, and a name practically begging to become a step challenge. The only question is: what kind of Steptember should your group run?
You could kick things off with a quick seven-day Streak, race through a virtual fall destination with friends, or bring an entire company together around one massive step goal. We planned seven challenges below, sized for everything from a handful of friends to a full company—plus a ready-to-launch Steptember template already waiting in our SuperDash admin center.
Why Run a Steptember Challenge?

September is already a reset moment. Routines are settling back down after summer, and a challenge just gives that reset a start date and something to work toward together.
The theme does half the work for you. Steptember is easy to understand, easy to promote, and works for everything from a free group step challenge among friends to a walking challenge app for a small team or a company-wide step challenge for a few hundred people. The name sells itself, so you don't need a complicated campaign concept, just the right mode and goal for your group.
Walking is easy to build into a normal day. A lunchtime loop, an extra dog walk, the long route through the grocery store, or a few laps between meetings can all move someone closer to their goal, making a walking challenge a practical starting point for groups with different schedules and activity levels. Stridekick also connects with popular fitness trackers and health apps, making it easier to run a group fitness challenge across different devices and activity levels.
Thirty days gives the challenge room to build momentum. September is long enough for participants to settle into a routine, hit milestones, and see real progress, without stretching so long that the finish line starts to feel distant. Based on more than 10 years of running group step challenges, we generally recommend keeping challenges to 30 days or less—here's our full guide to choosing the right step challenge length.
Seven Steptember Challenge Ideas You Can Launch Today
We’ve included ideas for every plan type on Stridekick: from free to Unlimited corporate plans. Use these ideas as-is, or adjust the goals, duration, and challenge description to fit your group.
1. The Seven-Day Steptember Starter 🔥
Plan: Free • Challenge Mode: Streak • Goal: 7,000 steps per day • Suggested Duration: 7 days
Copy-and-paste challenge description:
September is here, and we're kicking it off one step at a time! Your goal is to reach 7,000 steps every day for seven days.
Walk before work, take the scenic route, or pace through one more episode—we're keeping this Streak alive all week long. Let's start Steptember strong! 🔥
Prize idea: Streak is all about daily consistency, and a perfect week deserves real recognition. Enter anyone who completes the full seven-day streak into a participation raffle—a Hyperice Hypersphere Go is an easy prize to keep on hand for it.
2. Jump Into Steptember 🍂
Plan: Pro • Challenge Mode: Virtual Race (browse Stridekick's Virtual Race maps) • Goal: 85 miles (adjust to fit your group*) • Map: Jump Into Fall • Suggested Duration: 30 days
*The 85-mile route averages about 2.8 miles per day, so scale it down for a more beginner-friendly group or up if past challenge data supports a higher target.
Copy-and-paste challenge description:
Ready to leave summer in the dust?
This Steptember, we're traveling the Jump Into Fall map through crisp air, changing leaves, and peak fall energy. Every walk moves you farther along the route, so lace up, log your distance, and see where you land by the end of the month. 🍁
Prize idea: Raffle everyone who reaches the finish line, plus a bonus drawing when participants reach the halfway mile marker—Echelon Compression Boots make a fitting recovery prize for anyone who's covered that much ground.

3. Steptember 200K 🎯
Plan: Pro • Challenge Mode: Target • Goal: 200,000 steps • Suggested Duration: 30 days
Copy-and-paste challenge description:
Your Steptember mission: reach 200,000 steps before October arrives.
There's no daily number to protect and no race to finish first. Take a longer walk one day, slow it down the next, and keep working toward your own finish line throughout the month.
Two hundred thousand steps. Thirty days. Let's see where they take you. 👟
Prize idea: Raffle everyone who reaches the full 200,000 steps, with a mid-challenge entry for anyone who's already passed 100,000. Target gives participants more flexibility because progress is measured across the full challenge rather than day by day—one missed day never ends it. A Kineon RELIEF+ Trigger Point Therapy Tool makes a fitting finisher prize for legs that covered 200,000 steps at their own pace.
4. Labor Day Steptember Challenge 👣
Plan: Free — add the self-care bonus below if you’re on Unlimited, which supports stacking up to three modes • Challenge Mode: Target (70,000 steps) & Freestyle • Suggested Duration: Labor Day week
Copy-and-paste challenge description:
As we celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of fall, what do you say we do a little fitness overtime? Aim to reach 70,000 steps in the week leading up to Labor Day, and put in a good shift at the wellness factory! Enjoy the long weekend, and let's take our health to new heights! 👣
Unlimited add-on: Stack a Freestyle bonus for self-care—a hammock nap, a face mask, a favorite podcast episode 🧘—alongside the step goal.
Prize idea: Raffle everyone who reaches 70,000 steps, and give a bonus entry to anyone who also logs their self-care bonus activity. A Recess Greatest Hits Sampler fits the unwind-a-little vibe of this one nicely.

Running Steptember with friends or family?
Free is a good fit for a public challenge with up to 10 people across seven days. Upgrade to Pro in the app when you want a private challenge, a challenge lasting up to 45 days, or room for a larger group of up to 50 participants.
Planning a Steptember Challenge for a Company or Organization?
Stridekick Unlimited unlocks all eleven of Stridekick's challenge modes, including Team and Group modes, the ability to stack up to three challenge modes at once, 100+ ready-to-launch Challenge Templates, detailed reporting, and access to our SuperDash admin portal. That makes it the perfect fit for a corporate step challenge, workplace walking challenge, employee wellness challenge, association, school, nonprofit, club, or large community event.
Here are three Steptember ideas built specifically for companies running employee group step challenges this September:
5. Steptember: Fall Into Fitness 🍁
Plan: Unlimited • Challenge Mode: Stick To It (30 active minutes, 10x this month), stacked with a Freestyle Custom Activity streak (10 sit-ups/day) • Suggested Duration: 1 month
Copy-and-paste challenge description:
Our favorite part of September is undoubtedly watching the leaves change color. This month, show it some appreciation by going on a 30-minute nature walk at least 10 times, and as a bonus custom activity, complete 10 sit-ups per day. There's no better time to jump into a new wellness routine!
Prize idea: Raffle everyone who hits 10 Stick To It days, and a separate raffle for anyone who kept up the sit-up streak—a Hyperice Venom 2 Back works well for the Stick To It drawing, and a Nike Dumbbell makes a fitting prize for the sit-up streak.
Quick note: Stick To It differs from Streak in one important way—participants can reach the goal a set number of times during the challenge rather than every single day, so it's a good option when your group wants more flexibility.
6. The Great Steptember Team Trek 🗺️
Plan: Unlimited • Challenge Mode: Team Virtual Race • Goal: 90 miles (adjust to fit your group) • Map: Trek Through National Parks • Suggested Duration: 30 days
Copy-and-paste challenge description:
Grab your team—we're taking Steptember on the road!
This month, every mile helps move your team across the Trek Through National Parks map in this team fitness competition, past scenic overlooks, forest trails, and probably a bear or two. Rally your crew, keep your team moving, and see how far you get by the end of the month. 🐻
Prize idea: Reward the first-, second-, and third-ranked teams at the end of the challenge, then enter every team that completes the route into a separate team raffle so participants outside the podium still have a reason to finish. Echelon Adjustable Dumbbells (7.5–52.5 lbs in one set) make a solid podium prize. A shoutout for best team name and team spirit never hurts.
Team scores use average distance per member, so teams of different sizes can compete without the largest team getting an automatic edge.

7. 15 Million this Steptember 👣
Plan: Unlimited • Challenge Mode: Group Target • Goal: 15,000,000 steps • Suggested Duration: 30 days
Copy-and-paste challenge description:
This Steptember, we’re working toward one big goal: 15 million steps together.
Every walking meeting, lunchtime lap, and “I forgot my water bottle upstairs” trip moves the entire group closer to the finish line. Whether you contribute a few thousand steps or a few extra miles, every bit of movement adds to our shared progress.
Let’s see what we can accomplish together—and how far 15 million steps can take us. 🙌
Prize idea: Unlock one shared reward when the group reaches the target—a charitable donation, a team lunch, or a digital celebration all work—then run a final raffle for every participant who recorded activity during the challenge. A ClassPass Membership (confirm availability in your winner's area first) works well as that raffle prize. For a larger annual program with room in the budget, a Hydrow Wave Rower makes a strong launch-moment grand prize for a raffle amongst the top contributors.
For a different group size, use this formula: individual daily goal × number of participants × number of challenge days. For example, 5,000 steps × 100 participants × 30 days lands at 15,000,000. Our SuperDash goal-setting guide has more examples for individual, team, and group challenges.
Our Top Pick: The Ready-to-Launch Steptember Template
Don't want to build your challenge from scratch? Our Steptember Challenge Template is already live in the SuperDash Challenge Templates library.
Plan: Unlimited • Challenge Modes: Streak + Group Target • Streak Goal: 5,000 steps per day + Group Target: 15,000,000 steps • Duration: 30 days

The two goals are intentionally aligned. For example, across 30 days and 100 participants, a 15-million-step target works out to an average of 5,000 steps per person per day—the same number participants are working toward in the Streak. Adjust the Group Target for your actual headcount using the formula above.
The Streak gives each participant a daily goal to protect. The Group Target takes those individual steps and turns them into one shared finish line. That's the value of stacking challenge modes: participants have their own progress to follow while still contributing to something the entire group can celebrate. Learn more about why stacking challenge modes keeps more people engaged.
Launch the template with one click from your SuperDash Challenge Templates library, then adjust the Group Target if needed for your final participant count.
Pro Tip: You can also enable Personalized Goals, letting each participant choose their own Streak goal within a range you define—here's how to set that up in SuperDash.
The Steptember Prize Plan
The SuperDash template pairs these two modes with a prize strategy designed to reward both shared progress and individual consistency:
The group unlocks a shared reward when it reaches the 15-million-step target. Choose one reward for the whole group—a donation, a team lunch, a digital celebration, whatever fits.
The Most Consistent participant is also recognized. Use the AI Prompt Playbook and your challenge report to identify the participant whose activity was most consistent across the challenge, rather than defaulting to the person with the highest total. A HOKA Bondi 9 is a fitting reward here—confirm sizing and style preference first, or offer a gift card instead.
Three daily syncers are rewarded via lottery—anyone who syncs activity every day of the challenge enters the pool, and three winners are selected at random. Choose three prizes at a similar value, such as a Hyperice Hypervolt Go 2, a Hyperice Vyper 3, and an Obé Fitness Membership. Running a larger annual program? A Tonal 2 or Eight Sleep Pod can create a strong grand-prize moment when the budget supports it.
Once you've identified your Most Consistent participant and daily syncers, draw and announce your winners!
