Ready to feel like a beauty influencer? Don’t worry, you won’t have to take selfies or talk to yourself in public—you’ll just need to look like a cyborg for 10 minutes every other day. We are, of course, talking about red light masks!

Red light therapy has become mainstream in the skincare world for its ability to ramp up cellular energy, which can boost collagen production and support skin regeneration. But these benefits only come when you use a device backed by legitimate tech (and with the sheer number of masks available today, that’s harder to find than you might think).

To make your shopping process a tad easier, we plucked three prominent brands from the pile—Omnilux, HigherDOSE, and Celluma—and directly compared them with help from a dermatologist. Read on for the complete comparison!

The Expert

What to Look For in a Red Light Mask

Before getting into the specifics of each brand, we talked to Dr. Odueyungbo about what the average consumer should look for in a red light mask. Here’s what she recommends:

  • “‘FDA-cleared’, not just ‘FDA-registered’: Check the exact model and what it is cleared to treat, such as facial wrinkles. Registration alone does not mean the FDA has reviewed the device’s safety or effectiveness.”
  • Evidence over flashy features: “Red and near-infrared light—including wavelengths such as 633 and 830 nanometers—have been studied for skin rejuvenation and healing. Look for clinical evidence supporting the actual device, rather than being impressed by a rainbow of light settings and cool and trendy looks on social media.”
  • “Buy something you’ll actually use a few times a week. Consider comfort, facial coverage, and the length of each session. Consistency matters, so a manageable routine is more valuable than an impressive-looking mask that stays in a drawer or your nightstand.”
  • Safety first: “Follow the device’s eye-protection requirements, and speak with your dermatologist first if you have a light-sensitive condition or take medication that increases light sensitivity. A light therapy device isn't for everyone.”
  • Manage expectations: “Expect gradual improvement, not an overnight transformation. Results vary and require ongoing use. Think of red light as an optional addition to your skincare routine—not a replacement for daily sun protection. The results can also fade if you aren't consistent.”

Omnilux vs. HigherDOSE vs. Celluma: Which Red Light Mask is Best?

Here’s the good news: Omnilux, HigherDOSE, and Celluma red light therapy devices are all FDA-cleared for their advertised purposes. They also all use science-backed wavelengths to stimulate real results. They’re all legitimate options, but key differences between them might make one a better (or worse) choice for your routine.

Best Research-Backed: Omnilux

Pros:

  • Backed by over 40 peer-reviewed studies
  • Made of flexible, medical-grade silicone

Cons:

  • Only one treatment setting per mask

Omnilux is one of the most popular LED light therapy mask brands, and having been founded in 2003, it was among the first red light masks ever to hit the market. And as a longstanding brand, it offers a major benefit over many newer options: it’s backed by more than 40 peer-reviewed clinical studies and trials, with compelling results. Omnilux Contour, the brand’s bestseller, was found to provide a 37.6% reduction in wrinkles, 38.7% improvement in skin smoothness, and 29.3% improvement in elasticity in a 4-week clinical study.

The Omnilux device collection also includes a variety of devices to fit different needs, including:

  • Omnilux Contour Face, with 633nm red and 830nm near-infrared light to improve fine lines, wrinkles, skin tone, and skin hydration

  • Omnilux Contour Neck & Décolleté, offering the same 633nm red and 830nm near-infrared light in a device that molds over the neck and upper chest, an often neglected area of delicate skin

  • Omnilux Men, the very first LED light therapy mask designed for men’s thicker skin with 633nm red and 1072nm near-infrared light

  • Omnilux Clear, with 415nm blue and 633nm red light to help kill acne-causing bacteria and promote healing

  • Omnilux Contour Glove, with 633nm red and 830nm near-infrared light to tackle signs of aging in the hands, like age spots and crepey skin

It’s worth noting that each device only comes with one 10-minute setting with automatic shutoff. Some competitors come with multiple settings in a single device (like a red light setting for anti-aging and a blue light setting for acne). Omnilux also sells eye shields separately, although the mask meets international eye safety standards (the extra shields are optional for comfort, not required for safety).

Best for a Secure Fit: HigherDOSE

Pros:

  • Comes with 2 timed settings (10 and 20 minutes)
  • Uses 3 straps for a secure, comfy fit

Cons:

  • No blue light setting or mask available

HigherDOSE is a female-founded wellness tech brand offering infrared sauna blankets, PEMF mats, and red light therapy devices, among other products. Its FDA-cleared Red Light Face Mask was found to significantly improve fine lines, wrinkles, skin firmness, skin elasticity, and redness in an 8-week clinical trial. This mask uses the same research-backed wavelengths as Omnilux devices (633nm red and 830 near-infrared), and it’s similarly priced (Omnilux Contour comes in at $395, while HigherDOSE’s Red Light Therapy Face Mask costs $349).

HigherDOSE’s red light mask comes with 2 timer settings, allowing you to choose between 10- or 20-minute sessions. It also uses 3 straps (most masks only use 2) for a more secure, comfy fit. And when we’re wearing a red light mask 3 to 5 times weekly, that comfortable fit can make a real difference in our willingness to stick to the routine. But if you’re looking to target acne, this isn’t the brand for you: they don’t currently offer a blue light mask to target acne-causing bacteria.

Best Red Light Panel: Celluma

Pros:

  • Patented panel design molds over the treatment area
  • Each panel offers multiple modes to address different concerns

Cons:

  • Panel design inhibits multitasking

Celluma offers pro-grade light therapy devices for skin health, hair growth, and pain relief. But unlike the masks offered by the above brands, Celluma devices come in panel form. Far from the rigid block of light you might be picturing, Celluma panels have a patented, flexible silicone design that you can mold to the treatment area, within an inch of the skin. You can’t exactly walk around while you use it, like you can with a red light mask, but Celluma panels make up for it with multiple modes (Celluma FACE offers one for rejuvenation and one for acne) and the ability to use it up to 30 minutes daily for maximum benefits.

Along with Celluma FACE, which offers 465nm blue, 640 red, and 880nm near-infrared light, Celluma’s line of light therapy devices includes:

  • Celluma RESTORE, a 3-mode device for hair growth, skin aging, and pain management

  • Celluma NOVA, a 5-mode device for hair growth, skin aging, acne, pain relief, and body contouring

  • Celluma HOME, a compact option with 2 modes for skin aging and pain relief

  • Celluma PRO, the #1 globally award-winning LED light therapy device that can be used on the face or body, with 3 modes for acne, skin aging, and pain relief

A Note From Dr. Odueyungbo

To add to the breakdown above, we asked Dr. Odueyungbo for her take on Omnilux, HigherDOSE, and Celluma. Here’s what she said:

“Omnilux Contour Face and HigherDOSE’s Red Light Face Mask both offer wearable red-and-near-infrared designs with 10-minute treatment options. Those similarities make comfort and ease of use practical considerations; specifications alone would not make me declare one the winner. I personally have the Celluma facial panels at home and in my clinic,” she says.
