Headspace

Along with the creative and colorful animations that greet you each time you open the app, Headspace has a variety of guided meditations that you can choose from, including meditations focused on helping you live a happier life, sleep more, and reduce your stress and anxiety. The app will also prompt you to watch a new 3-5 minute daily "The Wake Up" video each morning, which can be a great way to start your day off on a mindful note. Many of the meditations offered require a subscription purchase, but there are free options to choose from as well. You can use the Headspace app on either iOS or Android.

MyLife Meditation

MyLife Meditation is a neat app to try if you'd like targeted meditations based on how you're feeling in a particular moment. Each time you open the app, you'll be prompted to rate how you're feeling physically, mentally, and emotionally, and then the app will recommend meditations that would suit your needs based on your answers. Some of the recommended meditations require a subscription purchase, but there are also free options to choose from. After your meditation, you will be prompted to rate how you're feeling again. You may be surprised to find out just how much a short meditation can improve your mood! You can use the MyLife Meditation app on either iOS or Android.

Day One Journal

The Day One Journal app can help you begin and maintain the journal you've always wanted. The app has a simple interface and allows you to set up daily prompts and reminders to create a journal entry to help you stay on track. There's also an option to write from pre-made templates like 5 Minute AM and 5 Minute PM, daily gratitude, or even daily meal logs. The app also keeps track of your daily streak count to help motivate you to start a daily habit. The free version of Day One allows you to keep one journal on one device, while the premium paid options allow for the creation of more than one journal, journal syncing between devices, and more. You can use the Day One Journal app on either iOS or Android.

Gratitude

Kick off your new year with Gratitude! Studies have shown that gratitude journaling can improve both your mental and physical health. This no-frills gratitude journaling app allows you to set daily reminders to take time each day to write down what you're grateful for. You can also access prompts and example responses to help you get started. The Gratitude app is free but offers a Pro version as well with additional features such as the ability to backup, restore, and export your journal. Stridekick

Looking for a fun, easy-to-use step challenge app? We may be biased, but we suggest checking out the free Stridekick app! The app allows you to create your own step and activity challenges and invite up to 9 other participants to join you.* Stridekick is an especially great option if you and your friends have different fitness trackers or devices, since you can connect a supported fitness tracking device (such as a Fitbit, Garmin, Apple Watch, or your iPhone/Android phone via the Apple Health/Google Fit apps) to sync your steps into the app. Then, you can choose from 3 different challenge modes (Leaderboard, Streak, and Target), specify the length of your challenge (1-31 days), and invite your friends to get started. The Leaderboard mode is our personal favorite and is always a crowd-pleaser! The Stridekick app is available on both iOS and Android devices at this time.

  • Interested in running a step challenge for a larger group or organization instead? Check out our MoveSpring platform for your next step challenge.

Down Dog HIIT

For a more regimented workout routine, Down Dog HIIT is a subscription-based app (free workouts are also offered) that coaches you through personalized HIIT workouts based on the responses you provide. You can select the duration of your workout (1-90 minutes), what kind of workout you're going for (Arm Day, Leg Day, Fat Burn, Total Body Shred, etc), and how long you'll do each exercise. You can even customize your workout further by selecting the types of exercises you'd like for the app to choose from and toggling how much of each type of exercise (aerobic, core, glutes, upper body, etc.) you'd like to perform during your workout. The Down Dog HIIT app is available on both iOS and Android at this time. And if HIIT isn't your thing, not to worry! Check out Down Dog Yoga app instead.

Nutrition & Diet

Plant Nanny²

There's no better reminder to drink water than a virtual pet letting you know they're thirsty! This unique app sets a personalized daily water consumption goal based on your weight and activity level. Then, each time you meet that daily goal, you'll get closer to growing or "leveling up" your new virtual plant pets. You can set up reminders throughout the day to ensure you're drinking enough water—and, of course, watering your new friend! The app is free and offers in-app purchases. You can use the Plant Nanny² app on either iOS or Android.

Tasty

In a rut with your cooking routine or looking to inspire yourself to cook more at home? Try out the free Tasty app that’s available on both iOS and Android. When you first download the app, you'll be prompted to select whether or not you're a vegetarian to customize your app experience. From there, you can use the discover tab to search and filter through the Tasty archives for lots of fun and creative recipe ideas. Filters include options like "5 ingredients or less" or "Under 30 minutes" to help you keep things simple when short on ingredients or time. You can also filter by diet (such as vegan, low-carb, pescatarian, etc.) so the app only recommends apps that suit your eating habits.

Learn Something New

Duolingo

Want to learn a new language without it feeling like a chore? Check out Duolingo. Duolingo offers short, interactive lessons on 35+ languages that feel just like a fun game on your phone. After selecting the language you want to learn, you can choose to start as a beginner or take a quick test to check your level. Then, you'll work your way through each set of lessons as you master basic vocabulary and move through the ranks of language competency. The app is free to use on iOS and Android but offers a paid "Plus" version that removes ads and the adds the ability to download lessons for offline use.

Libby

Take full advantage of your local library by accessing your library's online resources through the free Libby app on either iOS or Android! Just download the app and enter your library card information to get started. Then, you'll be able to browse & filter through your library's catalog to find ebooks, audiobooks, and even magazines that you'd like to borrow. Just like your local library, your loans will have a due date where they will be automatically returned and no longer accessible from your device. If you use a Kindle, you'll even be able to send ebooks from the app to your Kindle to read instead (U.S. only).
